Spoke to Jeff yesterday about the various versions of La Llorona and how some people see her as "Good" and some people see her as "Evil."
Some people say that even though she frightens kids and keeps them from doing things that are dangerous like playing at the river alone...that in some ways makes her "Good" because she is essentially protecting kids.
How do you see her?
We always heard she was bad. Why else would she drown her kid and kill other kids?

I published a fantasy book for young adults (HEART OF THE JAGUAR) last year detailing how the Llorona came to be, and it's ironic how similar my story is to the research you've done about her. In my novel, a young woman discovers that she has an ancient past (which takes place during Aztec times) that links her to the legendary woman and that past helps her overcome her troubled upbringing; thus, portaying the Llorona in a good light. So, according to me, she is a victim of circumstance and somewhat of a hero at best. Thanks for keeping the legend alive. I wish you much success!

I still find the similarity between the story of La Llorona to have parallels with the story of Medea, especially as told by Euripides.

What does la Llorona sound like? I've lived in Brownsville, Tx all my life, near the Rio Grande River. When I was younger, some friends, and I would go down to towards the river, sometimes we'd stay almost till sundown. I never heard nor seen, anything. Except for animals or other people, fishing or just passing by. I have heard different versions, of the tale, from my mother, grandmother, etc. And they are all the same. Lady in white roaming the night along the riverbanks or, near bodies of water. So what does she sound like? What does she really look like? Or, is she is just our imagination? Tell what your think, any commemts.

well let me just say that just because a women kills her children, people cant just say 'oh thats la llorona'. all those legends and stories dont connect to la llorona. those are just spirits or ghost that still haunt the places that they died because they lost their children. so we all know, there are many stories about it, but non are la llorona. i also have a story about la llorona and it originated in mexico from many years ago. cuz my family have seen la llorona many times and its because this woman's kids were taken away and now she is still looking for them.

Just finished watching "The Cry"--should be called "The Crying Shame". Definitely the worst movie I've seen in a long time. Uwe Boll would have been proud.
While La Llorona might be a terrifying myth, and the makings of an excellent story, the creators of this movie were not up to the task. This film was simply dreadful--cheesy, corny, and not the least bit scary at all. Couple that with bad image quality, humdrum acting and dialog, scenes that drag on forever when you already know where they are going, and amateurish camera work and college level "artsy" shots and you get an 80 minute yawn fest.
I definitely recommend the creators watch some quality scary films before making "The Cry 2".
